As the pandemic winds down (?) in Japan, events like the Autumn festivals have started up again, which include the tradition of the Omikoshi.

The Omikoshi is a portable shrine attached to 4 poles so that folks can carry the shrine around.

The idea is that the gods use the portable shrine to visit the surrounding neighborhood to bring good fortune and ward off calamity.

The Omikoshi is bounced up and down to increase the spiritual power in an act called Tamafuri (魂振り). Most Omikoshi weighs 400 kg (880 pounds), but the larger ones can go up to 1 ton (2200 pounds).

Last night in the Hatanodai area, wifey and I stumbled on some of the festivities.
