Today we are going to take a very brief look at paint masks that we use for the face production.
Here are 30 iterations of Journey’s paint mask which we have been working on since last June-ish. Each iteration represents a fix to the mask which is done by either chiseling or soldering. Each fix can take 1 - 2 weeks. One set of masks can cost up to a million yen (about 10,000 USD) depending on the character design. A mask is made by electromolding the head surface to produce a layer of bronze or nickel - the end result is a face plate. The amount of plates we make depends on the location and color of the shapes that make up the design. If you count the layers of paint for Smart Doll faceups you will notice that we use significantly more layers than most other manufacturers. For example Mirai Anniversary’s mouth alone has 4 colors meaning 4 masks just for the mouth.
In the first photo you can also see 3 masks which have ended up unusable - they just looked wrong on the final product.
