The Japan Toilet Institute has started a campaign called Lets love the toilet. The campaign has a few messages:- -Use toilet paper with care. -Think about the next person. -We can help our Earth starting from the toilet. The same institute carried out research which found that men used an average of 132 centimeters of toilet paper while women used 99 centimeters. They want to see if people start using less paper to wipe their bottoms after the campaign. I thought of many different questions to ask regarding how you wipe your bottom and whether you check to see how much you wiped off but thought I'd better not ^^; But hey, if you don't check, how do you know if you are clean or not? Do you wipe a certain amount of times regardless of how much you managed to wipe off with your quota? If you never look and only wipe 5 times, how about the rest that may get left over? Must get all squiggy and skiddy. Oh OK then - will ask in the poll. Only if you insist I ask. But I'm not going to ask you if you squash the paper together to make butterfly patterns. Image of our toilet washlet which washes our bottom holes for us - but we still need tissue to dry off as our one does not come with a dryer. Have you tried a Japanese washlet? I jumped off my seat when I first tried one ^^; Other things that our toilet does is warm the seat, control water pressure of squirt, turn on "massage mode" (the stream of water wiggles back n forth to remove stubborn corn or spinach) and after flushing, the water used to fill the tank comes from a tap object at the top of the toilet for you to wash your hands. you know, in my first bout with college, I had a speech class. For the first oral speech assignment for class we had to talk about something that annoyed us more than anyother thing. For me, that was doing my business and finding out that there was no toilet paper when done !! It was a very grand speech of 3-5 minutes that packed many great puns about all the make shift toilet paper options one could muster to find. I think the speech made an impact on the class and teacher =p Also whats up with the facet toilets, that act as a sink to wash your hands and recyle that water to the toilet after flush.?

Yes, I have one that has an air dryer, works very well. Ours also has a remote control make it easier to control. Best US$600 I've spend to upgrade my bathroom. We love it. Even if you don't use the "wash and dry" features, just having a warm seat on cold winter days makes it all worth it.

lol! You got me interested as well, how many fold can you do on a single handful of tissue paper? I usually fold twice, but on occasions of tissue scarcity, I can only fold up to a max of 3. Btw let me know if this be over sharing. ^^;

I'm sure you remember what English toilets are like Danny. Yep, they're still the same pretty much. I wish we could get a toilet more like the Japanese toilets. As for toilet paper, I use on;y what I need and well...you gotta check...its gross but, how else would you know if it was clean? You wouldn't.

Maybe they presume that they are clean after 2-3 meters or something... or don't care :P Seriously... some people either don't care or think it's so gross that they will not look. You should check what you leave behind though. Sometimes there can be something wrong with your body and changes in what you leave behind can be a clear sign of this. A doctor once asked me if mine was ok 48 hours ago so and 48 hours ago I had no idea that I will end up being terrible ill and rushed to a hospital >.<

Actually Japan tends to make "ridiculously high tech". However I would rather call it "poor component usage". It's a bit hard to explain what I mean so I will make up an example instead. A Japanese device contains 7 components annd it has 12 features (1,71 features/component). A European device has 3 components and it has 7 features (2,3 features/component). Naturally this is generally speaking but the Japanese aren't the best at getting hardware with limited capacity and then maximise how many features to add to it. On the other hand using more components can make the features more independant from each other, so it's not like one solution is better than the other, it's more like a tradeoff.

I remember when i stayed on my cousin home at Tokyo, i was surprised by the warmth when i sat down... they sure love their toilet... no wonder they have fetish for it... XD As for saving toilet paper while doing business... Let's just say that we Indonesians know the best when it comes to save toilet paper, but after hearing how people condemn, looked down, and avoid us after some of my friend decided to reveal the trade secret.. This time, i'd prefer to keep it a secret... for integrity sake... lol.

I think I know the secret. At least I know what the secret is in other countries. People not using the secret tend to look down on it for hygiene reasons. This actually keeps some tourists (including me) away. (the tourists who are unaware of this secret tend to think they can't deal with the spices or something since it upsets their stomack... the reason is the chef's secret though)

hahaha... lol. i'm not sure, but i think you got it right.... But you know what dude?? as long as you clean it thoroughly it's perfectly hygiene, at least in our eyes... Because to us, it's paper that's not clean enough.... XD And as for the food, please... of course it's not because of that... I've been living at Jakarta and i'm doing fine for 20 years eating everywhere here. I concede there's might be issue with hygiene, but it's not isolated to the 'lefty'... And of course the spices could play a part.... Anyway, it's culture, it's neither right nor wrong, right?

It's a well known fact in Europe that if you go visit a "paperless" country then you should expect to get to know the toilets in the country. Some people think it's due to unfamilar food, but this condition can spread to other people when they return home. The real is bacteria and knowing where they come from I think it's kind of gross. Maybe you guys can accept it because you are used to it and your body knows the local bacterias or something (making it more resistant), but it's nowhere like what we are used to in Europe (or at least Western Europe). Here it's headline stories every time somebody got ill from non-homemade food. The kitchen is shut down until the source of the contaminatoin is found and eliminated... yeah if "bathroom bacteria" is found in the food, then it's an instant forced closure. It may sound strict, but it means that you can buy food everywhere without health risk. To be honest I don't know if it is a problem in Indonesia or India, but I do know that it's a problem in northern Africa. Sure it's culture and I'm not going to take culture away from people. However culture shouldn't be that strong that you can't consider changing things if you realise that you are hurting other people. Poor toilet hygiene can even lead to colera, which is deadly.

yeah... it would be fairly safe to assume that everybody reading this tried at least one kind of toilet at least once. I'm not even trying to hide this fact: I will use toilets and toilet paper every day and I plan to do that for the rest of my life. Honestly I was intimidated by Japanese toilets. So many buttons and it was very complex. Didn't know which did what and I didn't dare try the water spray! My friend said it was nice though. Felt it would be weird. Wonders how Japanese feels when they have to use toilets overseas which are less advance.
